Scope of Service
Reese Gunsmithing LLC provides general gunsmithing and refinishing services for a variety of modern American cartridge-loading firearms made after year 1900.
Limitations
The following are specific types of work or specific firearms excluded from service.
Generally Excluded Work
REESE GUNSMITHING LLC does not service any air guns (e.g., dart, airsoft, paintball, or pellet), bows, crossbows, swords, knives, toy guns, 3D-printed firearms, firearms whose internal components are mainly made of plastic (e.g., American Tactical Omni Hybrid), or non-firearm militaria.
Firearms manufactured prior to 1900 not patented by John Moses Browning (c. 1879 and following) are generally not considered to be serviceable by our shop.
Firearms using obsolete ammunition or ammunition available only by handloading may not be serviceable and will be accepted at the shop’s discretion.
In addition, we do not service non-serialized firearms of any kind manufactured subsequent to the Gun Control Act of 1968, including “ghost guns” or firearms manufactured at home for personal use by non-FFL licensees.
Troubleshooting Problems Associated with Handloads
Our shop is not licensed to commercially reload ammunition, and we do not provide reloading advice or load development services. A serviced firearm is considered fully functional when it operates as intended by the manufacturer with factory-loaded ammunition. Reese Gunsmithing LLC is not liable for firearms malfunctions related to ammunition loaded by hand or ammo that is modified from factory conditions.
Turkey Shoot Guns
Shotguns intended for turkey shoot competitions whose critical components have been previously modified by the owner or another gunsmith are generally not accepted for service. Reese Gunsmithing LLC does not modify critical components or provide accurization services for turkey shoot guns outside general sight or scope mounting services.
Previously Serviced by An Unqualified Gunsmith
In the United States, there is no generally accepted standards organization or governing body to certify gunsmiths or guarantee a minimum acceptable level of workmanship. As such, work performed by inexperienced or unqualified gunsmiths may render a firearm permanently inoperable or unsafe.
For the safety of our staff, we request that you disclose any work performed to the firearm by another gunsmith shop prior to leaving said firearm with us for service.
If the gunsmith, at any point during the completion of the work order, determines the firearm to be unsafe or unserviceable, we reserve the right to abort the work order, reassemble the firearm in its present condition, charge a reasonable fee for services thus far provided, and we will require that you sign an “Unsafe to Fire” acknowledgement card
Excessive Wear and Tear
If your firearm is deemed by the gunsmith to be unsafe or unserviceable due to abuse, neglect, normal wear and tear, age, or improper usage, the firearm will be returned to you in its present condition, you will be billed a reasonable fee for services provided thus far, and we will require that you sign an “Unsafe to Fire” card prior to claiming your firearm.
Excessively rusted firearms, waterlogged firearms, firearms held together by tape or nails, and firearms damaged by fire will not be accepted for service.
Firing Pin Removal
In the event that a customer expresses credible intentions of discharging a firearm deemed Unsafe to Fire by our gunsmith despite the gunsmith’s warning, we reserve the right to remove or otherwise disable the firing pin(s) from the customer’s gun prior to returning it as a safety measure.
Excluded Manufacturers
Reese Gunsmithing LLC does not provide services for any firearms produced by the following manufacturers:
§ RG / Rohm
§ Bryco
§ Jimenez
§ Hi-Point
§ Raven
§ Lorcin
§ Jennings
Work Excluded on Specific Models
We do not offer repairs for mechanical issues (including failure to eject or extract) for any of the following firearm models:
§ Savage/Stevens/Springfield Models 87, 51
§ Remington 740, 742, 7400, Model Four (semi-auto)
§ J.C. Higgins Model 31 (.22 caliber)
Exceptions
In certain circumstances, a gunsmith may make a one-time exception to the above exclusions. In the event that service is provided outside the scope
Because shop staff may not always be familiar with your service item prior to accepting it for service, it is your responsibility to inform the shop if you are requesting service on an item matching one of the excluded models or categories listed above, after which, the shop staff member will consult with a gunsmith for specific approval.
Parts, Ammo, and Accessories
Reese Gunsmithing LLC sells gun parts, firearms, accessories, cleaning supplies and ammo to the general public by request/special order only. Firearms are NOT kept in inventory/stock on the property. Customers who have a firearm at our shop for service may request special order items to be used in conjunction with the completion of the work order (e.g., ordering a Leupold scope to install on the rifle being serviced). An advance deposit is required for large ticket items (see below for details).
Work Orders
Limitations
A work order constitutes an expression of a customer’s desired work to be performed and does not represent a contractual obligation between the two parties. If the gunsmith feels it is in the customer’s interest, he may modify minor details of the work order without the customer’s consent. If the gunsmith finds a problem with the firearm outside the scope of the work order which he feels is critical to the safety or function of the firearm, we reserve the right to perform the necessary repairs without the customer’s consent.
Price Estimates
Rough pricing estimates are available upon request. By approving a work order, you approve spending up to $135 per firearm or 120% of the provided estimate, whichever is greater. In the event that an estimate was not provided at the time the work order was approved, you agree to pay up to 120% of the generally agreed market value for the products or services provided. Estimated pricing is subject to parts and materials pricing and availability.
Changes
In the event that you wish to change the details of a work order after initial acceptance, any requested changes must be submitted in writing (by mail or email), and must receive a written acknowledgement by our shop. Change requests not acknowledged and approved in writing are not binding, and you will be financially liable for services performed as requested at the time of initial work order approval unless an approved change request is on file. If the work initially requested has already been performed at the time of the change request, charges will be assessed for both the initial and subsequent service.
Minimum Shop Charge
The minimum hourly shop charge per work order is $50.00 at the time of this writing. This minimum charge assumes the customer pays by cash or credit card and does not include the cost of parts, ammo, materials, misc. fees, and/or sales tax. Exceptions to the minimum $50 per hour rate are if the service being provided is less than the hourly rate which are listed un shop prices. All credit/debit card transactions will come with a 2.4% processing fee based off of the total of the invoice.
Reserving Your Place in Line
Your firearm must be present at our shop in order to hold its place in line. For a firearm that is not present, reservation services are not available at this time, but may be implemented at a future date. In this case, a non-refundable fee may apply for reserving your position in line while maintaining possession of the firearm.
Alternatively, an expedited service is available at the gunsmith’s discretion for an additional fee.
Estimate Lead Times
Estimated lead times for services vary throughout the year based upon our work load, the availability of parts/materials, and are available upon request. Estimated completion dates are not binding and do not constitute an appointment date to pick up your firearm. In some cases, an estimated completion date for a work order may fall on a holiday or a day on which our shop is not open. Please be advised that Reese Gunsmithing LLC cannot guarantee our ability to provide an appointment time on the day on which your work order is estimated to be completed.
Acquisition and Disposition
Strict federal laws govern the acquisition (when you drop a gun off with or ship a gun to us) and the disposition (when we return a gun to you in person or ship it back to you) of firearms. We seek to abide by the law in every way as we conduct business.
Reese Gunsmithing LLC is free to acquire and dispose firearms at will so long as our Federal Firearms License remains valid. Customers are welcome to view the current copy of our license in the shop or to have a file copy sent to them or a transferring gun shop upon request.
Definition
The ATF’s definition of a firearm is different than the way we use the term in everyday conversation. For purposes of the law, the legal status of a firearm is connected with the gun’s receiver. In the case of multi-part receivers of models individually specified by the ATF (including the ArmaLite AR-15, clones, and variants), only the lower portion of the receiver is subject to federal restrictions governing firearms. Firearms without a traditional receiver (such as certain handguns) may have another component, such as the frame or fire control unit (FCU), specified by the manufacturer as the restricted portion of the firearm. Recently manufactured firearms may contain multiple parts or components subject to firearms restrictions.
Suppressors, although not receivers, are also classified as firearms and are subject to all the same restrictions as well as additional restrictions specified in the National Firearms Act of 1934 and subsequent ATF interpretation and guidance (see below).
All firearms manufactured subsequent to the Gun Control Act of 1968 must contain an engraved serial number and name of the manufacturer / importer. Customers presenting firearms manufactured on or after 1968 which do not contain these markings will be denied service and directed to the nearest ATF field office for guidance on submitting the firearm for ATF review and registration.
Firearms components not identified as the restricted portion of the receiver are typically not subject to the same laws as the firearm receiver, frame, or FCU and are generally transferrable to any individual previously authorized by the original claimant. Examples of non-restricted firearm components typically include stocks, barrels, bolts, triggers, scopes and scope mounts, non-suppressor muzzle devices, small parts, and rails and accessories. Customers are encouraged to consult with shop staff prior to dropping off a firearm component to determine whether disposal of the component is subject to transfer restrictions.
Other Restricted (NFA) Firearms
Suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and machine guns are NOT serviceable by our shop UNLESS the owner remains onsite during the work/service.
In order to pick up an NFA-restricted firearm or component, claimants must present a valid and unexpired government-issued photo ID and a valid and unexpired Special Occupational Tax Stamp or an approved ATF Form 4 tax stamp matching the details of the firearm for claim. An original issuance of the stamp is preferred. Poor-quality, illegible, or incomplete copies of your stamp will not be accepted.
The transporter of an NFA-restricted firearm is solely responsible for obtaining prior government approval for interstate travel in accordance with 18 U.S.C. § 922(a)(4) prior to dropping off or picking up the firearm from our shop. Our shop staff reserve the right to request evidence of this approval prior to accepting an NFA-restricted firearm for reserve or before returning it to a claimant.
Limitations
Reese Gunsmithing LLC is unable to dispose firearms to unauthorized individuals. In order for our shop to dispose a firearm to you, you must:
1. Be the person who dropped off the firearm, or we must be shipping the firearm back to the address provided to us at the time of drop-off on your government-issued photo ID, and we must not have knowledge of any present status which would disqualify you from legally acquiring the firearm from us at the time of pickup.
2. Or, pay a $25 transfer fee (per firearm), complete an ATF Form 4473, undergo an FBI NICS background check or present concealed handgun permit (handguns), present a valid and unexpired government-issued photo ID and permit our shop to make photocopies for our records, and legally and primarily reside in the state of Colorado (CO ID required for ALL firearm transfers/purchases unless you are active duty military and have a copy of your orders bringing you to Colorado).
3. Or, be an on-duty law enforcement officer, in uniform, presenting a valid badge and photo identification, permitting our shop to make photocopies of your ID for our records.
4. Or, be possessor of a valid and unexpired Federal Firearm’s License whose FFL Type permits acquisition of the firearm in question without a Form 4473 or background check, or provide our shop with the shipping details and FFL file copy of such a licensee for the firearm to be sent to the licensee by mail in accordance with the shippers terms of service and federal law (the customer is responsible for compensating our shop for estimated shipping charges and a reasonable handling fee prior to shipment, as well as any fees assessed by the receiving licensee for accepting the shipment and completing and processing any applicable transfer paperwork).
Excepting on-duty law enforcement officers presenting a warrant, a directive from the manager of the estate of a deceased claimant, or the failure of a claimant to claim a firearm in a timely manner, Reese Gunsmithing LLC will not dispose a firearm to a person not listed on a firearm’s work order and claim check unless authorization is provided by the claimant, in writing, prior to the time of the transaction.
